About

"Why do I suddenly move to other countries to live?"

Adventure Through Young Eyes, a community-led of these young adventurers. Aiming to offer a nurturing space for children to explore their immigration experiences and emotions through engaging workshops.

Over the course of four weeks, Hayes and Chris had the privilege of meeting these remarkable children in Kingston. Through the power of art and therapy, they built meaningful connections with children, providing a safe and supportive environment to express themselves freely. The children's multi-faceted works, spanning from drawings and writings to heartfelt discussions, offered profound insights into their emotions and perspectives on immigration.

The workshops served as an insightful field study and ethnographic exploration, allowing us to understand the intricate complexities of their journey. Through these vibrant narratives, we embarked on a transformative journey of co-creation. We carefully transformed their artworks and words into a captivating publication, a collective effort that beautifully embodies their voices and experiences.

Exhibition

An exhibition is coming soon, where these inspiring stories will reach a broader audience. The first exhibition will be held in Kingston, creating a powerful link with the workshop participants who reside here. Together, we will celebrate the profound resilience and creativity of these young immigrants, as they share their stories with the world. Join us on this transformative expedition, where art and emotions unite to illuminate the vibrant narratives of Adventure Through Young Eyes.

Meet us in future

Based on the resounding success and positive feedback from Kingston, we envision extending Adventure Through Young Eyes to other areas, including New Malden, Manchester, Birmingham, and more, aiming to foster empathy and understanding across diverse communities.

This exhibition is the result of a collaborative project between
17 immigrant youths from Hong Kong and artist Hayes Ng. Over the course of a three-day art workshop, the participants created emotion palettes and self-representative collages, reflecting their experiences and emotions following their migration to the UK. Each emotion palette captures significant moments and feelings from their lives, utilizing personalized patterns to express their journey of adapting to a new environment and exploring their evolving identities.

The collages further develop these emotion patterns by deconstructing the self-representative designs and reassembling them into new, dynamic artworks. This process illustrates how these young individuals rethink, accept, and reshape their sense of self as they navigate the complexities of change. Through this creative exploration, they not only embrace transformation but also reveal their personal growth and potential.

Presented through augmented reality (AR), the collages highlight the multifaceted nature of youth, reinforcing the idea that understanding young people requires us to look beyond the surface. These artworks serve as a reminder that their emotions and experiences, while often subtle and nuanced, are deeply profound. Their capacity for creativity and their courage to engage with change are truly extraordinary.

This exhibition features 32 illustrations and letters that depict post-migration life through the eyes of young immigrants.

Each piece originates from one of five research workshops, each centred around a distinct theme. These themes have been thoughtfully reorganised and interconnected to provide a clearer narrative of the youths' choices and their often suppressed voices throughout their migration journeys. In response to the theme of repressed voices, the exhibition also includes an interactive component, inviting visitors to respond to the stories shared by these immigrant youths.

During the workshops, Hayes and the participants developed a strong bond, and he views this exhibition as a commitment to sharing their stories. It also serves as a valuable contribution to the ongoing archive of the Hong Kong migration wave.

Workshop

The Workshop features artwork created by nine Hong Kong children and our conversations. It provides a genuine insight into their immigration experiences, offering a valuable reference for parents and those concerned.

It also comprises a collection of stories that emerged during the workshops, showcasing the tales shared by these children. Additionally, it aims to let other immigrant children, or those preparing for immigration, know that they are not alone.

The artist, Hayes, invites you all to momentarily set aside your adult roles and join us in experiencing the joys and challenges of immigration from the perspective of a child.

Letters to HKers

We use a map to identify the relationships between different places. By drawing a personal map, we identify the relationships between ourselves and the community that we live in. It can represent the journey of life, highlighting significant events, milestones, and experiences. It includes places we live in, travelled to, or important moments that have shaped us. It is a visual narrative of personal history. It could be a representation of our emotional landscape, with  different places associated with various emotions and states of mind. For example, we might have visited some places that made us feel happy, sad, love, fear, or facilitated our personal growth. A personal map could help us understand our emotional patterns and triggers associated with our relationship with our community.

The immigrant children crafted a map to the external realm of the Kingston community, offering us a valuable compass to navigate the intricate landscape of their inner thoughts and emotions.

Publications

The publication collection comprises three items: the Immigration Guidebook, a Memory Luggage, and an Envelope. The Guidebook is a 76-page hand-bound publication, co-authored by Hayes, Chris, and nine young Hong Kong immigrants. It serves as a comprehensive record of the illustration workshop, providing educators, researchers, parents, and other immigrant youths with a deeper understanding of immigration. Each Memory Luggage contains a unique 3D scene reconstructing a youth's immigrant memory, rebuilt by Hayes. The Envelope includes letters written by immigrant youths, as well as blank letters inviting others to respond. The overarching goal is to gradually build an online immigrant archive that features all participating immigrants' drawings, letters, and dialogues, alongside the research that supports this project.
