Objects and Memories

Objects are often seen beyond its mass and existence by humans, who often associate objects with memories and emotions. The relationship between the three elements are complex and multifaceted. Objects have a profound impact on our memories and emotions. They can trigger vivid recollections that carry emotional weight. Understanding how objects trigger memories helps us understand the wide range of emotions that are evoked. The relationship between objects, memory, and emotion is a testament to the power of our personal and collective histories in shaping our emotional experiences. By understanding the objects that were brought by our young immigrants from Hong Kong to this country, we sought to also understand the memories and the emotions associated with these objects. We asked them further to draw objects or non-objects that they wish they would have been able to bring with them during the migration. They also drew their personalised suitcase to simulate the process of packing their luggage.
